NASA USRC Proposal

  • The Problem
    Nasa
    • Drone delivery has typically been approached with multicopter or variable takeoff and landing (VTOL) topologies
    • Fixed-wings have largely been avoided aside from a few companies (e.g. Zipline)
    • We sought to create a device that would maximize the efficiency, range, and cruise speed of a fixed-wing while retaining the maneuverability and other package delivery advantages of a multicopter or VTOL
  • Our Solution
    • Dronehook: A Novel Fixed-Wing Package Retrieval System
    • Our proposal describes a system capable of retrieving a package "in-stride" and continuing onto its destination with little to no delay or change in altitude
    • Dronehook draws significant inspiration from the Fulton surface-to-air recovery system
    • We provide rationale to justify our hypothesis that a fixed-wing with our system is capable of outperforming a VTOL airframe
